Available information for airport
Located five miles south of Kahlotus, Washington, Lower Monumental is one of three state-managed airports on the Snake River. WSDOT leases the airport from the Corps of Engineers. Camping is available on the airport. For dam tours, call 509-282-3219.
The 3,300 foot gravel runway is located part way up the west wall of the canyon. The airport elevation is 813 feet, and density altitude problems are common in the summer. The surface is gravel and can be loose and may not be suitable for low wing lower prop aircraft. Tall weeds are also a problem so overflight is highly recommended to check conditions. The airport is use-at-your-own-risk! Funding, available crews, and equipment are limited and efforts to compact the gravel and apply a layer of CSS1 Asphalt emulsion that helps keep the gravel down has been delayed. Pilots need to be extremely careful on runups and takeoffs due to potential for prop strikes. A vehicle access gate has been installed to limit unauthorized airport access; however people and animals have been observed on the runway. Spray operators also occasionally use the facilities. Vehicle access is allowed by permission only on a limited basis by contacting the state airport manager.
The windsock is located midfield on the west side. Terrain rises quickly east and south of the field. There is a powerline 2300 feet north of the airport, and another paralleling the field 500 feet west. We recommend overflight to determine field conditions and check for obstructions. Watch for snakes while walking around. The airport is open year round however in winters months if a rare snow occurs, its closed.
