State Route 500 (SR 500) from Northeast Fourth Plain Boulevard to Northeast 76th Street in Vancouver and unincorporated Clark County needs repairs to its pavement. This work is necessary to keep the road in good condition and protect the publics investment in it. A review called the Complete Streets screening showed that this project should include upgrades for all types of road users, like pedestrians and cyclists. A pre-design study for these improvements is currently underway and is expected to be finished by Spring 2025.
This section of SR 500 has gaps in bicycle and pedestrian facilities that make walking, biking and rolling difficult within the project limits. The Complete Streets pre-design study will develop concepts for addressing these gaps and determine the cost to construct the preferred concept(s).
Construction of bicycle and pedestrian facilities will allow for multimodal use of the corridor, which can help to reduce congestion, improve air quality, and reduce vehicle miles travelled.
Additionally, the pavement along this portion of SR 500 is nearing the end of its usable life. Repaving this portion of SR 500 will ensure that the roadway remains in a state of good repair for many years to come.
Complete Streets
The pre-design study will include a Complete Streets analysis to identify improvements for pedestrians, bicyclists and for those who use mobility devices to travel through the area.
Complete Streets is an approach to planning, designing, building, operating and maintaining the transportation system to allow for safe and convenient access to destinations for all users, including pedestrians, bicyclists, mobility device users and transit riders.
