Project overview
The project is on I-5 from North Lake Samish (south of the city of Bellingham) to the city of Ferndale near the Nooksack River. The Portland Cement Concrete Panels within the project limits are approximately 60 years old and are near or have exceeded their design life. The project will provide pavement rehabilitation on northbound I-5 from milepost (MP) 246.06 to MP 263.04 through replacing broken concrete panels, diamond grinding all of the concrete pavement to provide a smooth driving surface and restriping the roadway. In addition, joint rehabilitation will be completed on 10 bridges within the project limits.
What to expect
This project has been paused due to lack of funding. It is unclear at this time if funding will become available to allow the project to continue. Travelers should not expect to see construction in the area.
Environmental justice assessment
An environmental justice assessment (EJA) will be completed for this project. These assessments are conducted for any significant agency action that could harm the environment or impact how environmental benefits are distributed to overburdened communities (OBCs) or vulnerable populations (VPs). An EJA guides decision-making to ensure fair distribution of environmental benefits, reduce environmental harms, and address disparities in both environmental and health outcomes. Meaningful engagement with affected communities is a crucial aspect of this process.
The Portland Cement Concrete Panels on this section of I-5 are showing signs of deterioration, and the joints on 10 bridges need to be rehabilitated.
