With new tunnel under 148th Avenue Northeast complete, crews will close the road June 23-26 to restore original traffic alignment
REDMOND – The nearly two-year-old project to reduce congestion at the State Route 520/148th Avenue Northeast interchange at the Redmond-Bellevue border will reach a new milestone the weekend of June 23-26.
Granite Construction, working for the Washington State Department of Transportation, has completed a tunnel under 148th Avenue Northeast that will provide direct access from eastbound SR 520 to 152nd Avenue Northeast. With that phase of the project complete, crews can remove the S-curves on 148th Avenue Northeast and restore the road to its original alignment.
148th Avenue Northeast closure
That work will happen during a full closure of 148th Avenue Northeast the weekend of Friday, June 23, to Monday, June 26. The off-ramps from eastbound SR 520 to both directions of 148th Avenue Northeast and the ramp from 148th Avenue Northeast to eastbound SR 520 also will close.
Closure hours
The following closures are planned from 11 p.m. Friday, June 23, to 5 a.m. Monday, June 26:
- Both directions of 148th Avenue Northeast between Northeast 24th Street and the SR 520 underpass.
- The ramps from eastbound SR 520 to northbound and southbound 148th Avenue Northeast.
- The ramp from 148th Avenue Northeast to eastbound SR 520.
Signed detours will be in place throughout the weekend, and uniformed police officers will direct traffic at key intersections as needed.
Construction on the SR 520/148th Avenue Northeast project began in fall 2021 to address congestion that frequently backed up from the intersection onto eastbound SR 520. This project:
- Realigns the existing two-lane off-ramp from eastbound SR 520 to 148th Avenue Northeast.
- Built a tunnel for a direct-access off-ramp from eastbound SR 520 to Overlake Village.
- Builds three new city streets and two roundabouts to connect the direct-access off-ramp to 152nd Avenue Northeast.
Construction will continue through the summer on the new direct-access ramp between SR 520 and the tunnel. Work also is ongoing on the new city streets and roundabouts east of the interchange. The project is scheduled to wrap up this fall.
