Work to stabilize the hillside above highway finishes ahead of schedule
HOQUIAM – There’s good news to share with spring break travelers in the Hoquiam area. State Route 109 between Hoquiam and Grays Harbor City reopened Thursday, March 30.
On March 22, contractor crews working for the Washington State Department of Transportation closed SR 109 around the clock to remove trees of concern from the hillside above the highway west of the SR 109 Spur. The contractor expected the closure to last three weeks but completed the work in half that amount of time.
Why this was needed
Removing large trees from the roadway extends the amount of time it takes to clean up after a slide. During the project, crews removed trees with shallow roots that had the potential to fall into the roadway.
