Three-year construction project and long-term closure of Wellesley Ave. begins this fall
SPOKANE, WA- The community is invited to a public meeting on Thursday, May 30 for an overview of the North Spokane Corridor (NSC) project and construction of the NSC Wellesley Avenue interchange. The interchange will take three years to complete.
This fall, contractor crews working for the Washington State Department of Transportation will begin construction on the NSC Wellesley Avenue interchange. Beginning late fall or early winter, Wellesley Avenue between Market St. and Freya Street will be closed to pedestrian, bicycle and vehicular traffic. The closure, which will be in effect until the end of 2022, allows crews to construct the new Wellesley Ave. interchange as part of the US Route 395/North Spokane corridor construction.
Travelers should expect both temporary and permanent road closures as NSC construction north of the Spokane River commences this year. The first of construction projects begins summer 2019 and ends in 2021. The last of the projects should be completed by the end of 2022.
Francis, Ave., Euclid Ave., Carlisle Ave., and Upriver Dr. will remain open. However, Euclid Ave. between Market and Ralph will have intermittent temporary closures to allow for relocation of utilities, installation of a new railroad crossing, and general reconstruction of Euclid.
The first project includes the realignment and relocation of the BNSF railroad tracks from Rowan Ave. to Cleveland Ave. to make way for the future NSC mainline alignment.
Concurrent with rail replacement project additional work and projects being completed are the Wellesley Ave. Interchange, construction of the accompanying Children of the Sun Trail, and the pedestrian-only bridges and amenities associated with the shared use trail from Columbia Ave. down across the Spokane River.
Bridgeport, Fairview, Cleveland, Grace, Marietta and Jackson Ave’s. will be permanently closed in the vicinity of the NSC to make way for the freeway.
